人能正靜者，筋肕而骨强。能戴大圓者，體乎大方。鏡大清者，視乎大明。正靜不失，日新其德，昭知天下，通於四極。金心在中不可匿，外見於形容，可知於顏色。善氣迎人，親如弟兄；惡氣迎人，害於戈兵。不言之言，聞於雷鼓。金心之形，明於日月，察於父母。昔者明王之愛天下，故天下可附；暴王之惡天下，故天下可離。故貨之不足以爲愛，刑之不足以爲惡。貨者愛之末也，刑者惡之末也。

As soon as the loss of the waggons and horses was generally known, all the owners came upon me for the valuation which I had given bond to pay. Their demands gave me a great deal of trouble, my acquainting them that the money was ready in the paymaster's hands, but that orders for paying it must first be obtained from General Shirley, and my assuring them that I had apply'd to that general by letter; but, he being at a distance, an answer could not soon be receiv'd, and they must have patience, all this was not sufficient to satisfy, and some began to sue me. General Shirley at length relieved me from this terrible situation by appointing commissioners to examine the claims, and ordering payment. They amounted to near twenty thousand pound, which to pay would have ruined me.

The holder of the mortgage had long demanded that he should be paid, but somehow even the interest was barely kept up, and the creditor finally threatened to sell us out. As it happened, the money had been lent by a deacon in the church, but notwithstanding this fact, he felt that he should have his money, and perhaps he really needed it. Anyhow, he proposed to take such steps as were necessary to get it. The matter came to a head one Sunday morning, when the minister announced from the pulpit that the $2,000 would have to be raised, or we should lose our church building. I therefore found myself at the door of the church as the congregation came and went.
