冬，十月，丙午，太子加元服，赦天下。初，太宗疾山東士人自矜門地，昏姻多責資財，命修《氏族志》例降一等；王妃、主婿皆取勳臣家，不議山東之族。而魏徵、房玄齡、李勣家皆盛與為昏，常左右之，由是舊望不減，或一姓之中，更分某房某眷，高下懸隔。李義府為其子求昏不獲，恨之，故以先帝之旨，勸上矯其弊。壬戌，詔後魏隴西李寶、太原王瓊、滎陽鄭溫、范陽盧子遷、盧渾、盧輔、清河崔宗伯、崔元孫、前燕博陵崔懿、晉趙郡李楷等子孫，不得自為昏姻。仍定天下嫁女受財之數，毋得受陪門財。然族望為時俗所尚，終不能禁，或載女竊送夫家，或女老不嫁，終不與異姓為昏。其衰宗落譜，昭穆所不齒者，往往反自稱禁婚家，益增厚價。

The lines in those days worked poorly, and during a storm much had to be guessed at. My guessing powers were said to be phenomenal, and it was my favorite diversion to fill up gaps instead of interrupting the sender and spending minutes over a lost word or two. This was not a dangerous practice in regard to foreign news, for if any undue liberties were taken by the bold operator, they were not of a character likely to bring him into serious trouble. My knowledge of foreign affairs became somewhat extensive, especially regarding the affairs of Britain, and my guesses were quite safe, if I got the first letter or two right.

Important negatives affecting our prospects today are: (1) a less attractive stock market than generally existed over the past 24 years; (2) higher corporate tax rates on most forms of investment income; (3) a far more richly-priced market for the acquisition of businesses; and (4) industry conditions for Capital Cities/ABC, Inc., GEICO Corporation, and The Washington Post Company - Berkshire’s three permanent investments, constituting about one-half of our net worth - that range from slightly to materially less favorable than those existing five to ten years ago. All of these companies have superb management and strong properties. But, at current prices, their upside potential looks considerably less exciting to us today than it did some years ago.
