先生問九川：「於『致知』之說體驗如何？」 九川曰：「自覺不同。往時操持常不得個恰好處，此乃是恰好處。」 先生曰：「可知是體來與聽講不同。我初與講時，知爾只是忽易，未有滋味。只這個要妙再體到深處，日見不同，是無窮盡的。」又曰：「此『致知』二字，真是個千古聖傳之秘，見到這裏，『百世以俟聖人而不惑』。」

愛問：「昨聞先生『止至善』之教，已覺功夫有用力處。但與朱子『格物』之訓，思之終不能合。」 先生曰：「『格物』是『止至善』之功，既知『至善』，即知『格物』矣。」 愛曰：「昨以先生之教推之『格物』之說，似亦見得大略。但朱子之訓，其於《書》之『精一』，《論語》之『博約』，《孟子》之『盡心知性』，皆有所證據，以是未能釋然。」 先生曰：「子夏篤信聖人，曾子反求諸己。篤信固亦是，然不如反求之切。今既不得於心，安可狃於舊聞，不求是當？就如朱子亦尊信程子，至其不得於心處，亦何嘗茍從？『精一』、『博約』、『盡心』本自與吾說吻合，但未之思耳。朱子『格物』之訓，未免牽合附會，非其本旨。精是一之功，博是約之功，曰仁既明知行合一之說，此可一言而喻。『盡心、知性、知天』是『生知安行』事，『存心、養性、事天』是『學知利行』事，『夭壽不貳，修身以俟』是『困知勉行』事。

You may remember the wildly upbeat message of last year’s report: nothing much was in the works but our experience had been that something big popped up occasionally. This carefully- crafted corporate strategy paid off in 1985. Later sections of this report discuss (a) our purchase of a major position in Capital Cities/ABC, (b) our acquisition of Scott & Fetzer, (c) our entry into a large, extended term participation in the insurance business of Fireman’s Fund, and (d) our sale of our stock in General Foods.

百世以俟聖人而不惑，知人也。是故君子動而世爲天下道，行而世爲天下法，言而世爲天下則。遠之則有望，近之則不厭。詩曰：『在彼無惡，在此無射。庶幾夙夜，以永終譽。』君子未有不如此而蚤有譽於天下者也。」仲尼祖述堯舜，憲章文武，上律天時，下襲水土。譬如天地之無不持載，無不覆幬，譬如四時之錯行，如日月之代明。萬物並育而不相害，道並行而不相悖。小德川流，大德敦化，此天地之所以爲大也。唯天下至聖，爲能聰明叡知，足以有臨也；寬裕温柔，足以有容也；發強剛毅，足以有執也；齊莊中正，足以有敬也；文理密察，足以有别也。溥博淵泉，而時出之。
