Charlie Munger:Multiple Models and the Hammer

Charlie Munger《A Lesson on Elementary, Worldly Wisdom As It Relates To Investment Management & Business》· The models: multiple models · Cognition · Decision · Learning

What are the models? Well, the first rule is that you've got to have multiple models—because if you just have one or two that you're using, the nature of human psychology is such that you'll torture reality so that it fits your models, or at least you'll think it does.

Archived transcript, paragraph 7 (beginning “What are the models?”)

Reading

Using only one or two models makes you distort reality to fit them.

Context

In his 1994 USC talk, Munger made multiple mental models the first lesson of worldly wisdom. He warned that people with only one or two models unconsciously distort reality to fit them. Multiple models are a safeguard against self-deception, not intellectual decoration.

Today's question

Which model do you rely on most—and when did it last make you misread reality?
