先生謂學者曰：「為學須得個頭腦，工夫方有著落；縱未能無間，如舟之有舵，一提便醒。不然，雖從事於學，只做個『義襲而取』，只是行不著、習不察，非大本、達道也。」又曰：「見得時，橫說豎說皆是。若於此處通，彼處不通，只是未見得。」
