惟乾問：「知如何是心之本體？」 先生曰：「知是理之靈處。就其主宰處說，便謂之心；就其稟賦處說，便謂之性。孩提之童，無不知愛其親，無不知敬其兄，只是這個靈能不為私欲遮隔，充拓得盡，便完；完是他本體，便與天地合德。自聖人以下，不能無蔽，故須『格物』以致其知。」
