先生問九川：「於『致知』之說體驗如何？」 九川曰：「自覺不同。往時操持常不得個恰好處，此乃是恰好處。」 先生曰：「可知是體來與聽講不同。我初與講時，知爾只是忽易，未有滋味。只這個要妙再體到深處，日見不同，是無窮盡的。」又曰：「此『致知』二字，真是個千古聖傳之秘，見到這裏，『百世以俟聖人而不惑』。」
