天下乘馬服牛，而任之輕重有制。有壹宿之行，道之遠近有數矣。是知諸侯之地，千乘之國者，所以知地之小大也，所以知任之輕重也。重而後損之，是不知任也；輕而後益之，是不知器也。不知任，不知器，不可謂之有道。
