古者武王地方不過百里，戰卒之衆不過萬人，然能戰勝攻取，立爲天子，而世謂之聖王者，知爲之之術也。桀、紂貴爲天子，富有海內，地方甚大，戰卒甚衆，而身死國亡，爲天下僇者，不知爲之之術也。故能爲之，則小可爲大，賤可爲貴；不能爲之，則雖爲天子，人猶奪之也。故曰：「巧者有餘，而拙者不足也。」
