「吳王謂子胥、孫武曰：『始子言郢不可入，今果何如？』二將曰：『夫戰，借勝以成其威，非常勝之道。』吳王曰：『何謂也？』二將曰：『楚之為兵，天下彊敵也。今臣與之爭鋒，十亡一存，而王入郢者，天也，臣不敢必。』吳王曰：『吾欲復擊楚，奈何而有功？』伍胥、孫武曰：『囊瓦者，貪而多過於諸侯，而唐、蔡怨之。王必伐，得唐、蔡。』」
