秋，七月，壬子，以吏部尚書長孫無忌為右僕射。無忌與上為布衣交，加以外戚，有佐命功，上委以腹心，其禮遇群臣莫及，欲用為宰相者數矣。文德皇后固請曰：「妾備位椒房，家之貴寵極矣，誠不願兄弟復執國政。呂、霍、上官，可為切骨之戒，幸陛下矜察！」上不聽，卒用之。
