上使太常少卿祖孝孫教宮人音樂，不稱旨，上責之。溫彥博、王珪諫曰：「孝孫雅士，今乃使之教宮人，又從而譴之，臣竊以為不可。」上怒曰：「朕置卿等於腹心，當竭忠直以事我，乃附下罔上，為孝孫遊說邪？」彥博拜謝。珪不拜，曰：「陛下責臣以忠直，今臣所言豈私曲邪！此乃陛下負臣，非臣負陛下。」上默然而罷。明日，上謂房玄齡曰：「自古帝王納諫誠難，朕昨責溫彥博、王珪、至今悔之。公等勿為此不盡言也。」
