房玄齡、珪掌內外官考，治書侍御史萬年權萬紀奏其不平，上命侯君集推之。魏徵諫曰：「玄齡、珪皆朝廷舊臣，素以忠直為陛下所委，所考既多，其間能無一二人不當！察其情，終非阿私。若推得其事，則皆不可信，豈得復當重任！且萬紀比來恆在考堂，曾無駁正；及身不得考，乃始陳論。此正欲激陛下之怒，非竭誠徇國也。使推之得實，未足裨益朝廷；若其本虛，徒失陛下委任大臣之意。臣所愛者治體，非敢苟私二臣。」上乃釋不問。
