李世勣嘗得暴疾，方云「須灰可療」；上自剪須，為之和藥。世勣頓首出血泣謝。上曰：「為社稷，非為卿也，何謝之有！」世勣嘗侍宴，上從容謂曰：「朕求群臣可托幼孤者，無以逾公，公往不負李密，豈負朕哉！」世勣流涕辭謝，嚙指出血，因飲沉醉；上解御服以覆之。
