辛亥，上幸九成宮。壬子，至太平宮，謂侍臣曰：「人臣順旨者多，犯顏則少，今朕欲自聞其失，諸公其直言無隱。」長孫無忌等皆曰：「陛下無失。」劉洎曰：「頃有上書不稱旨者，陛下皆面加窮詰，無不慚懼而退，恐非所以廣言路。馬周曰：「陛下比來賞罰，微以喜怒有所高下，此外不見其失。」上皆納之。
