三月，丁丑，車駕至定州。丁亥，上謂侍臣曰：「遼東本中國之地，隋氏四出師而不能得；朕今東征，欲為中國報子弟之仇，高麗雪君父之恥耳。且方隅大定，惟此未平，故及朕之未老，用士大夫餘力以取之。朕自發洛陽，唯啖肉飯，雖春蔬亦不之進，懼其煩憂故也。」上見病卒，召至御榻前存慰，付州縣療之，士卒莫不感悅。有不預征名，自願以私裝從軍，動以千討，皆曰：「不求縣官勳賞，惟願效死遼東！」上不許。
