上將發，太子悲泣數日，上曰：「今留汝鎮守，輔以俊賢，欲使天下識汝風采。夫為國之要，在於進賢退不肖，賞善罰惡，至公無私，汝當努力行此，悲泣何為！」命開府儀同三司高士廉攝太子太傅，與劉洎、馬周、少詹事張行成、右庶子高季輔同掌機務，輔太子。長孫無忌、岑文本與吏部尚書楊師道從行。壬辰，車駕發定州，親佩弓矢，手結雨衣於鞍後。命長孫元忌攝侍中，楊師道攝中書令。
