「古聖人勞躬養神，節欲適情，尊天敬地，履德行仁。是以上天歆焉，永其世而豐其年。故堯秀眉高彩，享國百載。及秦始皇覽怪迂，信禨祥，使盧生求羨門高，徐市等入海求不死之藥。當此之時，燕、齊之士，釋鋤耒，爭言神仙。方士於是趣咸陽者以千數，言仙人食金飲珠，然後壽與天地相保。於是數巡狩五嶽、濱海之館，以求神仙蓬萊之屬。數幸之郡縣，富人以貲佐，貧者築道旁。其後，小者亡逃，大者藏匿；吏捕索掣頓，不以道理。名宮之旁，廬舍丘落，無生苗立樹；百姓離心，怨思者十有半。書曰：『享多儀，儀不及物曰不享。』故聖人非仁義不載於己，非正道不禦於前。是以先帝誅文成、五利等，宣帝建學官，親近忠良，欲以絕怪惡之端，而昭至德之塗也。

凡言與行，思中以爲紀。古之將興者，必由此始。後至就席，狹坐則起。若有賓客，弟子駿作。對客無讓，應且遂行。趨進受命，所求雖不在，必以反命。反坐復業，若有所疑，捧手問之。師出皆起。至於食時，先生將食，弟子饌饋。攝衽盥漱，跪坐而饋。置醬錯食，陳膳毋悖。凡置彼食，鳥獸魚鼈。必先菜羹，羹胾中別。胾在醬前，其設要方。飯是爲卒，左酒右醬。告具而退，捧手而立。三飯二斗，左執虛豆，右執挾匕。周還而貳，唯嗛之視。同嗛以齒，周則有始。柄尺不跪，是謂貳紀。先生已食，弟子乃徹。趨走進漱，拚前斂祭。先生有命，弟子乃食。以齒相要，坐必盡席。飯必捧擥，羹不以手。亦有據膝，毋有隱肘。既食乃飽，循咡覆手。振衽掃席，已食者作。摳衣而降，旋而鄉席。各徹其餽，如於賓客。既徹并器，乃還而立。

弘羊自以為國興大利，伐其功，欲為子弟得官，怨望大將軍霍光，遂與上官桀等謀反，誅滅。 宣、元、成、哀、平五世，亡所變改。元帝時嘗罷鹽鐵官，三年而復之。貢禹言：「鑄錢采銅，一歲十萬人不耕，民坐盜鑄陷刑者多。富人臧錢滿室，猶無厭足。民心動搖，棄本逐末，耕者不能半，姦邪不可禁，原起於錢。疾其末者絕其本，宜罷采珠玉金銀鑄錢之官，毋復以為幣，除其販賣租銖之律，租稅祿賜皆以布帛及穀，使百姓壹意農桑。」議者以為交易待錢，布帛不可尺寸分裂。禹議亦寢。 自孝武元狩五年三官初鑄五銖錢，至平帝元始中，成錢二百八十億萬餘云。 王莽居攝，變漢制，以周錢有子母相權，於是更造大錢，徑寸二分，重十二銖，文曰「大錢五十」。

But the proprietaries were enraged at Governor Denny for having pass'd the act, and turn'd him out with threats of suing him for breach of instructions which he had given bond to observe. He, however, having done it at the instance of the General, and for His Majesty's service, and having some powerful interests at court, despis'd the threats and they were never put in execution....
