文學曰：「君子進必以道，退不失義，高而勿矜，勞而不伐，位尊而行恭，功大而理順；故俗不疾其能，而世不妒其業。今商鞅棄道而用權，廢德而任力，峭法盛刑，以虐戾為俗，欺舊交以為功，刑公族以立威，無恩於百姓，無信於諸侯，人與之為怨，家與之為讎，雖以獲功見封，猶食毒肉愉飽而罹其咎也。蘇秦合縱連橫，統理六國，業非不大也；桀、紂與堯、舜並稱，至今不亡，名非不長也；然非者不足貴。故事不茍多，名不茍傳也。」
