特進同中書門下三品宋公蕭瑀，性狷介，與同寮多不合，嘗言於上曰：「房玄齡與中書門下眾臣，朋黨不忠，執權膠固。陛下不詳知，但未反耳。」上曰：「卿言得無太甚！人君選賢才以為股肱心膂，當推誠任之。人不可以求備，必捨其所短，取其所長。朕雖不能聰明，何至頓迷臧否，乃至於是！」瑀內不自得，既數忤旨，上亦銜之，但以其忠直居多，未忍廢也。
