先生曰：「眾人只說『格物』要依晦翁，何曾把他的說去用？我著實曾用來。初年與錢友同論做聖賢，要格天下之物，如今安得這等大的力量？因指亭前竹子，令去格看。錢子早夜去窮格竹子的道理，竭其心思；至於三日，便致勞神成疾。當初說他這是精力不足，某因自去窮格，早夜不得其理；到七日，亦以勞思致疾。遂相與嘆聖賢是做不得的，無他大力量去格物了。及在夷中三年，頗見得此意思。方知天下之物本無可格者。其格物之功，只在身心上做；決然以聖人為人人可到，便自有擔當了。這裏意思，卻要說與諸公知道。」

文學曰：「古者之賦稅於民也，因其所工，不求所拙。農人納其獲，女工效其功。今釋其所有，責其所無。百姓賤賣貨物，以便上求。間者，郡國或令民作布絮，吏恣留難，與之為市。吏之所入，非獨齊、阿之縑，蜀、漢之布也，亦民間之所為耳。行奸賣平，農民重苦，女工再稅，未見輸之均也。縣官猥發，闔門擅市，則萬物幷收。萬物幷收，則物騰躍。騰躍，則商賈侔利。自市，則吏容奸。豪吏富商積貨儲物以待其急，輕賈奸吏收賤以取貴，未見準之平也。蓋古之均輸，所以齊勞逸而便貢輸，非以為利而賈萬物也。」

初，西突厥咥利失可汗分其國為十部，每部有酋長一人，仍各賜一箭，謂之十箭。又分左、右廂，左廂號五咄陸，置五大啜，居碎葉以東；右廂號五弩失畢，置五大俟斤，居碎葉以西；通謂之十姓。咥利失失眾心，為其臣統吐屯所襲。咥利失兵敗，與其弟步利設走保焉耆。統吐屯等將立欲谷設為大可汁，會統吐屯為人所殺，欲谷設兵亦敗，咥利失復得故地。至是，西部竟立欲谷設為乙毘咄陸可汗。乙毘咄陸既立，與咥利失大戰，殺傷甚眾。因中分其地，自伊列水以西屬乙咄陸，以東屬咥利失。

During the years when I was just coming to man's estate, the produce business of Clark & Rockefeller went on prosperously, and in the early sixties we organized a firm to refine and deal in oil. It was composed of Messrs. James and Richard Clark, Mr. Samuel Andrews, and the firm of Clark & Rockefeller, who were the company. It was my first direct connection with the oil trade. As the new concern grew the firm of Clark & Rockefeller was called upon to supply a large special capital. Mr. Samuel Andrews was the manufacturing man of the concern, and he had learned the process of cleansing the crude oil by the use of sulphuric acid.
